The Look: Ahar rugs have semi nomadic looks. The most famous design is Heriz (although Ahar rugs are from Ahar, not original Heriz rugs produced in Heriz). They typically do have one medallion in the center and another smaller medallion inside the first.

The General Feel for Quality: The quality of AHAR rugs, like all rugs, varies. The older Ahars are generally better pieces (rugs knotted before 1945). The quality of an AHAR rug is not as fine as a Tabriz or Heriz (Tabriz rugs are generally finer, dining/living room pieces and Heriz rugs are more warm, library-rug pieces). AHAR produces many rugs that are being falsely sold all around the world as a Tabriz or Heriz. Always check the border if to recongnize an Ahar rug: Ahar rugs usually do not have the straight lines represented in a good Tabriz or Heriz.

Shape and style: Ahar rugs have different sizes - the majority of them are mid size (4' x 6' to 8' x 10') You can also find large rugs up to large size (10' x 18'). AHAR rugs have the similar size as a Tabriz.

Color: Light ivory, red, brown and light blue are common color in AHAR rugs.

Pile Texture: Soft wool and thicker wool than a Tabriz, with no tight piles.

Foundation: Ahar warps are mostly cotton, with their wefts being either cotton or wool.
